Volcanoes

What they are and how they affect the state

Volcanoes are openings in the Earth’s surface where molten rock, ash, and gases can escape. California has more than 500 volcanic vents, and at least 76 have erupted within the last 10,000 years.

Although eruptions are not frequent, volcanoes remain an active hazard in the state and could impact public safety and the economy in the future.

“California is the most geologically diverse state in the nation. We are known for our earthquakes, landslides and flood hazards. But our nearly forgotten hazard is our volcanoes.”Dr. John Parrish, State Geologist of California
